Both get your business in front of someone who is searching for what you do. Beyond that, Google Ads and SEO are different tools, and most of the confusion we hear comes from treating them as interchangeable.
Google Ads, in one paragraph
You pay to appear at the top of the results page for searches you choose, and you pay only when someone clicks. It can be live within days. It stops the moment you stop paying. You control exactly which towns, hours and services it covers, and with tracking you can see what every call cost. It is the tool for calls this month.
SEO, in one paragraph
Search engine optimization is the work of earning a place in the unpaid results and the map pack: pages that answer what people search for, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, a fast site, and other trusted sites pointing to yours. It takes months to build and keeps working after the work is done. The clicks are free, which is why it is the tool for calls in three years without paying for each one.
Side by side
Speed. Ads: days. SEO: months, with the map pack usually moving first and the organic results later.
Cost. Ads: you pay per click, every month, forever. SEO: you pay for the work up front and ongoing, and the traffic has no per-click cost.
Control. Ads: precise. You choose the searches, towns and hours. SEO: you influence it, but Google decides.
Durability. Ads: stops when the budget stops. SEO: compounds, and a competitor cannot simply outbid you.
Trust. Some searchers skip ads and go straight to the map and organic results. Some click the first thing they see. Being in both places catches both.
How long does each take to work?
Google Ads can start producing calls the week it goes live, though the account needs a month or so of data to settle into its best cost per lead. SEO depends on how competitive your category and town are: easier map-pack terms often move within three months, and meaningful organic calls usually take four to six. Anyone promising faster is either in a very quiet market or not telling you the whole story.
When to choose which
Start with Ads if you need calls now, you are launching a new service, or your website is not yet built for search. Start with SEO if you have a steady business, a long horizon and you are tired of paying for every lead. Most of the businesses we work with run both: Ads for now, SEO for later, and the search-term data from Ads tells us exactly what to rank for. As the organic calls grow, the ad budget can shrink.
